Lensa AF-D adalah lensa fokus otomatis (Auto Focus) dengan CPU didalamnya, yang mempunyai kemampuan untuk menghitung jarak antara objek dengan kamera. Huruf D merupakan singkatan dari distance (jarak). Salah satu kegunaan pengukuran jarak objek terhadap kamera adalah pengaturan lampu kilat (en: flash light) secara tepat dan otomatis dari kamera tersebut.
Catatan:
- Fungsi "D" pada lensa ini bisa bekerja dengan baik bila lensa tersebut dipasang pada body kamera yang memiliki fasilitas 3D metering.
- Kekuatan lampu kilat bisa diatur oleh kamera jika lampu kilat tersebut mempunyai fasilitas TTL didalamnya.
- Lensa AF-D diperkenalkan pertama kali pada tahun 1992.
