Motor ultrasonik tersebut digerakkan atas perintah secara elektronik dari kamera, dan berkinerja amat cepat serta senyap (hampir tanpa bunyi) dibandingkan dengan jenis lensa auto focus lainnya dari Nikon yang digerakkan secara mekanis dari tubuh kamera, atau lebih dikenal sebagai lensa AF.
Jenis lensa AF-S merupakan generasi lensa terkini yang dibuat oleh Nikon, dan merupakan kelanjutan dari lensa manual serta lensa AF (mekanis).
Lensa dengan prinsip sejenis dan menggunakan penggerak motor ultrasonik dari Canon menggunakan istilah berbeda, yaitu USM (Ultra Sonic Motor), sementara Sigma menggunakan istilah HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor).
Hampir seluruh jenis lensa AF-S mempunyai kontak geser untuk 2 posisi, A/M dan M. Pada posisi A/M, lensa akan berfungsi sebagai lensa auto focus (jika menggunakan kamera yang kompatibel untuk proses auto focus) sekaligus berfungsi manual begitu cincin pengatur fokus digerakkan secara manual (manual override). Pada posisi M, lensa hanya bisa berfungsi sebagai lensa manual fokus.
